By Juan C. Ayllon It's no secret that I've been a bit nervous with our toddler grandchild, who's crawling and learning to pull himself up on things, spending more time at our home. And towards that end, I recently acquired a long, living edge board to use as a shelf C-clamped to a pair of weight lifting racks just behind my media stand to help give several components extra distance from his hands, should he manage to meander by my hi-fi system in a momentary lapse of supervision.

If you're like me, you find yourself wanting to upgrade your hi-fi equipment on a fairly regular basis. That's the nature of the audiophile disease, after all. For me, I had purchased the Lampizator Lite 7 Digital to Analog Converter back in 2015 (you can read my review HERE), but the following year at Audio Expo North America (AXPONA), I found myself drooling over it's bigger sibling, the Big 7 DAC. Unlike some fixations, this has been my lingering, secret obsession since then.
By Juan C. Ayllon I was perhaps three as I sat, marveling, as my father, a chemical engineer and strict disciplinarian, sang and played Spanish ballads with great abandon on his guitar next to me on our living room couch. His impassioned tenor vocals, accompanied by the warm, rich tones emanating from the sound hole of this massive, resonant, yellow and brown, yummy looking object he was strumming moved me so that I scooched over and took a bite—and then another, crunching tiny indentations along the edge of the guitar’s body. Amused but undeterred, my dad played on.
By Juan C. Ayllon New Year is a time of celebration, great fun and reflection. We laugh, we eat too much, spend too much on presents, but also take time to reassess and make some resolutions, right?
We're no different. In addition to revisiting new year fitness goals, refining career objectives, and building better connections with friends, family and community, there's the usual holiday rush. For me, it was fun but hectic, catching up with some review work, a few new surprises, and a trip to Florida for several days where Belle and I visited with my mother-in-law, Belle's sister, celebrated New Year's Eve, and got a little vacation break from the frigid Midwest tundra. |
