By Juan C. Ayllon With summer upon us, many have plans to get away and unplug from our harried schedules. That said, it is also a season when there’s a sharp rise in thunderstorms, hence nowadays I find myself unplugging my hi-fi from electrical outlets more often than usual.

By Juan C. Ayllon I had just completed the fourth grade and was waiting for my turn at bat in the third inning of a midsummer softball game, when a fast moving, murky wall of green-gray clouds appeared on the horizon. Turgid and roiling, they canvased the skies overhead in five minutes. Though it was midafternoon, it now appeared to be dusk, and the coaches canceled the game and told us to hurry home. Whooshing winds followed, and as hard as I pumped the pedals, I couldn’t make headway. Heart pounding, I leaned into the cool blast and, step by step, I was Sisyphus rolling a huge boulder uphill. I willed my bike home, where my mom, my brothers and I huddled in the crawl space and waited out the storm listening to radio updates.
