Life--and death--happens. Of this, there is no doubt, and, like time, it marches on. The last couple months have been a vortex of emotions and activity around here: hospice, the passing of my father-in-law, grieving and distracting, visits with family and a new grandchild, a new furniture set upstairs resulting an update in the man cave with the former living room set and the end of the first quarter and grading where I teach. And, now, there’s the inevitable pre-holiday rush of reviews awaiting completion with the arrival of the latest--the reference Triangle Art Anubis turntable, which weighs a whopping 150 lbs.! It’s going to be a fun but hectic season.

By Juan C. Ayllon Music has a way of interweaving in our subconscious with key life moments.
Bolivian folk music conjures childhood memories of laughter, loud conversations, dancing adults and thumping bass keeping me awake with vinyl spinning late into the night; Pat Metheny’s This Way Up, takes me back to 2010 with the intertwined fingers, passionate kisses, and long drives home from Belle’s with it blaring in my Mitsubishi Montero. And, most recently, songs from Karrin Allyson’s In Blue--which was streaming just before we received the news--along with Andreas Bocelli’s live rendition of “Amazing Grace” and Bette Middler's "Wind Beneath My Wings" will be forever conjoined with memories of the recent passing of my father-in-law, William Robert Stevenson. CHICAGO, October 8, 2019 -- For those familiar with this man cave, a lot of HD boxing viewing occurs within these walls, and this Saturday is no exception. Outstanding World Boxing Association Light-Heavyweight World Champion Dmitry Bivol, (16-0, 11 KOs), has arrived in Chicago from his training camp in Los Angeles ahead of his 12-round title defense against Dominican Lenin Castillo, (20-2-1, 15 KOs), this Saturday night, October 12. Bivol vs. Castillo is one of the featured bouts on Matchroom Boxing’s return to Chicago’s Wintrust Arena and will be telecast live on DAZN.
“I’m very excited to be in Chicago, this is my first time here and I like it here very much,” said the 28-year-old, a native of St. Petersburg, Russia. “Big beautiful buildings, very nice people and it’s a very clean city. I’m glad that I’m fighting here on Saturday night. I’m very happy that there are a lot of Kyrgyzstan, Russian and Ukrainian fans in addition to so many local fans coming to the fight.” |
